In the psychology of defense mechanisms and self-control,Acting out is performing an action considered bad, anti-social. In general usage, the action performed is destructive to self or to others. The term is used in this way in sexual addiction treatment, psychotherapy, criminology and parenting[citation needed]. In contrast, the opposite attitude or behaviour of bearing and managing the impulse to perform one’s impulse is called acting in[citation needed].

The performed action may follow impulses of an addiction (e.g. drinking, drug taking or shoplifting)[citation needed]. It may also be a means designed (often unconsciously or semi-consciously) to garner attention (e.g. throwing a tantrum or behaving promiscuously)[citation needed]. Acting out may inhibit the development of more constructive responses to the feelings in question[citation needed].

Freud considered that patients in analysis tended to act out their conflicts in preference to remembering them – repetition compulsion. The analytic task was then to help “the patient who does not remember anything of what he has forgotten and repressed, but acts it out” to replace present activity by past memory.

Random information on the term “Snit”:

The Max Rebo Band is a fictional alien pop music band in the Star Wars franchise, first appearing in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi as in-house performers for crime lord Jabba the Hutt. The lineup originally seen here consists of the blue-skinned Ortolan keyboardist Max Rebo, a plump Kitonak woodwind player named Droopy McCool, and the spindly-legged Pa’lowick lead singer Sy Snootles, while additional members were inserted into the later-edited Special Edition of the film. A great deal of further information about the band and the personal histories of its members, much of which may be regarded as apocryphal, is found in various literature of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

The group are classified as Jizz-wailers, which, according to the Star Wars Encyclopedia, refers to a “musician who plays a fast, contemporary, and upbeat style of music.”Max and Droopy were portrayed by actors in bodysuits, while Sy was operated by two puppeteers who were stationed above and beneath the set. The new members seen in the 1997 Special Edition re-release of Return of the Jedi were computer-generated, as was Sy Snootles in said version.
